Trump Should Be Cruising To Re-Election, But He’s A Moron

Coronavirus was an open-book test for Donald Trump. He failed, miserably.

He had the answers. We knew from seeing the virus spread through Asia and Europe what needed to be done. Lockdown as early as possible. Make sure people have money to survive a lockdown. Ramp up testing and PPE production. Enlist an army of contact tracers. Only re-open when cases have gone down for 14 days. Identify and isolate positive cases. Crush the spread.

Trump, aided by Republicans, did none of this. No national strategy. We’re worse now than we were in March. It’s nearly impossible to comprehend.

A national crisis during an election year should have sent Trump’s approval rating soaring. Just think if George W Bush’s re-election bid came six months after 9/11, he may have won every single state.

It’s called “rally around the flag” because, deep down, Americans know they’re on the same team. When we were attacked in 2001, we quickly came together as a people, tossed partisanship aside, and began our process of healing.

When coronavirus first hit the United States en masse in late February, it appeared that our current president would benefit from a similar bump. Leaders in other countries had seen their approval rates go up in those first few weeks, and so did ours. The swing voters and independents in our country wanted to believe the man that held the most important job in the land was up to the task.

He was not. Because that man in that job currently is an absolute idiot. Instead of attacking coronavirus head on and ensuring that Americans stay safe, healthy and alive, he attacked other Americans. He attacked Democrats. He attacked medical professionals. He ignored the advice of public health officials. He sent childish tweets at governors. He called for literal insurrections against public health orders. He lied to the American people on a daily basis through our televisions.

You cannot overstate how badly he ruined our response. Hundreds of thousands of Americans got sick unnecessarily and thousands of them died. Thinking about it for more than a few minutes makes me so upset that I legitimately feel like I'm going to throw up. How are we this terrible?

Despite his failure at the federal level, state governors have indeed received the rally around the (state) flag as intended. In poll after poll, state governor’s approval rates have soared past 60, 70, even 80 percent. Our president’s positive bump barely made it through March, and he now stands with the worst approval ratings of his awful presidency, and deservedly so.

According to Jared Kushner in April, July was right around when this country would really be rocking again. Instead, my Fourth of July was spent the same way I spent Memorial Day. Doing little, fighting depression, and hoping others successfully do the same.

All he had to do was listen to the medical professionals and public health leaders. He just had to wear a damn mask. He had to get testing ready. He needed to develop a nationwide contact tracing plan. He could have inspired a nation to fight coronavirus like other successful leaders have.

The most perplexing aspect of this entire debacle is that America had the blueprint! We knew coronavirus was coming for months. We saw what methods worked, and which didn’t, from real world applications across Asia and Europe. Everything that we need to do now - masks, contact tracing, social distancing - was apparent to us in March. It’s July, and he hasn’t figured that out yet?

Take a moment to just imagine if he had. I know it’s hard to imagine that buffoon doing the right thing, but bear with me for a moment and try. Imagine if we all wear masks. Imagine if every state had proper contact tracing and enough testing supply. Imagine if the NBA and NHL had already returned. Imagine if our unemployment rate was in the single digits.

His approval rating would certainly be well past 50 percent and, arguably, rightfully so. This was a test of the office of the President and our president was already given the answers by other countries.

Of course, he’s not cruising to re-election. In fact, it looks like quite the opposite. And it’s deserved.

No American President has ever failed as hard, as pathetically, or as embarrassingly as this one. He’s not fit for the office and let’s hope we won’t have to suffer this fool much longer.
