Through a remarkable turn of events, Jones became Alabama’s Senator after defeating child molester Roy Moore in a special election. It was a nearly one in a million shot to get a Democrat to represent Alabama but it happened.
During his time in office, Jones has been every bit the decent, honest man you would expect from a prosecutor who put the KKK in jail. While he will never be confused with his progressive counterparts from the coasts, he has supported Democrats on every key issue. Unlike other Alabama representatives, Jones is vehemently against racism and actually fights for his constituents.
At no point was the impact of Jones felt greater than during the impeachment hearing earlier this year. There was concern that a Democrat would cross party lines to “acquit” Trump since it was clear that Republicans were in the tank for Trump’s illegal activity. The conversation centered on two Senators from red States - Jones and Sen. Manchin from West Virginia. Of the two, it made sense to many that Jones would flip as he is up for re-election this year in a very red state.
But Jones is a good man, so he did not succumb to politics. He stood firm on his values. He stood firm on what he viewed as right. He voted to convict Donald Trump. From that moment forward, I believed in him.
America needs more good and honest people serving in Congress. No one is more good and honest than Jones. Starting with that vote, I have been donating $25 to him on a weekly basis to support his campaign.
Unfortunately, the national support from Democrats has been slow to come, if at all. I understand there are many more realistic chances for Dems to win states, and those should take precedent. But we cannot ignore Jones. I don’t care if his chance of winning is slim to none, with slim looking like it’s ready to leave. He deserves our support.
Even more than that, Jones is running against an absolute scumbag in Tommy Tuberville. As a college football fan, there have been few more loathsome characters than Tuberville. A liar and a cheat, he is everything wrong with college football coaches in one awful package. He left programs like Auburn, Cincinnati, and Texas Tech in ruins after he left.
This year, he’s become even more loathsome - if that’s possible - by going full racist in his election campaign. He’s spread garbage about Muslims and people of color. He echoes Trump’s comments because he has nothing else to run on. He’s human trash. He does not deserve to represent anyone in the Senate.
To make things even worse, he won’t even debate Jones. Not even once. He knows Jones is twice the man he is and would eviscerate him in a debate. So Tommy hides behind racist campaign ads and videos, while hoping just being on the ticket with Trump will get him elected.
It’s not right. Too many national pundits think the people of Alabama are too stupid or too racist to elect a good man like Doug Jones.
